How To See What You Want on a List Panel

How To See What You Want on a List Panel I had a user ask how to change the columns of the Network Contacts List Panel. It’s really easy, and one of the cooler features you can use in JibberJobber. There is a video showing how this works here (notice on the List Panel you’ll see a video icon â€" that is called “inline help.”). In the user orientation I might  say something like “I’m not going to pretend to know how you want to see your data” when you are looking at the List Panel.  Indeed this is not a preference that is unique to each user, but also to each project you work on. In other words, sometimes I change the view based on what Im trying to accomplish. What I mean is that I might like to have these columns, in this order: Last Name First Name Email Address City State And YOU might like to see (in this order): First Name Last Name State Tags There is no “better” way… it just depends on what you are doing. So we let you change it whenever you want. How? Click on the Manage Columns icon, which is to the left of the search box that is directly above the List Panel: On the left column of the screen you’ll see all of the columns you could show. You can do two things: Turn columns on and off by checking or unchecking the checkboxes. Reorder any of the columns by clicking on the blue box and dragging it to whatever position you want (like, drag the First Name box above the Last Name box â€" now it will be before it). Pretty cool, huh? You can watch the short video on this here. How To See What You Want on a List Panel I had a user ask how to change the columns of the Network Contacts List Panel. Avoid Making Common Resume Mistakes - Career Geek

Avoid Making Common Resume Mistakes - Career Geek Avoid Making Common Resume Mistakes Given below are some common resume mistakes people make: 1.             Unfocused resumes A resume must have a sharp focus. It is one of the most important elements. Employers and recruiters often spend around 6 seconds or so per resume nowadays, so it is important that they get an idea of what you want and what you can you do at a glance. According to studies, recruiters prefer resumes that clearly match the job requirements. Generalized resumes without any focus on the particular requirements of a job are not competitive at all. In fact, over 70 percent of recruiters and HR managers prefer resumes that are customized for the job opening. One of the best ways to sharpen your resume’s focus is to add certain verbiage at the top that catches the attention of the reader and lets him or her know the areas in which you can excel. The verbiage can be written in the following ways: With a headline, which is generally the title of the position advertised, so that you can adjust it according to the job you apply for A branding, ad-like statement that immediate tells the employer what you have to offer You can also add sections in the beginning like ‘qualifications summary’, ‘profile’, etc. Such sections can be written in bullet points so that recruiters can quickly go through them. A general rule to follow is to keep these sections within the top one-third portion of your resume. 2.             Resume focuses on duties rather than accomplishments A lot of job seekers write their duties when describing their previous jobs. However, resumes should primarily consist of accomplishments that portray the best of the candidate. Avoid using expressions like ‘responsibilities for’ or ‘duties included’, since they are generally for job description-based resumes and not accomplishment-based ones. In an age where recruiters filter resumes based on keyword searches, you will hardly ever find recruiters searching for resumes with words like ‘duties’ and ‘responsibilities’. When writing your job history, note down the accomplishments you have achieved during your previous jobs that can set you apart from the rest. Think about how you have personally helped employers to: Save time/money Make more money Make work more efficient and easier Solve specific problems Beat the competition Expand business Retain old customers Gain new customers Some applicants tend to list their accomplishments separately from their job descriptions. This can be  counter-productive  because it makes your resume unnecessary large, and a resume driven wholly by accomplishments is more efficient. 3.             Unordered job histories Job descriptions need to be set in a descending order of importance and interest. This means that the information that will most likely catch the interest of the recruiter should be added first. In the case of resumes, the most important information is your position. A good order for your resume is given below: Title/position Employer name City/state of the employer Date of employment A lot of job seekers tend to write the date of employment first, but this is not as important for recruiters as the title/position held by the applicant. Moreover, some employers use Applicant Tracking Systems, and using the above-mentioned order can help your resume function better with such systems. Even educational qualifications need to be written in order. A good order of educational information is given below: Name of the degree, fully spelt out, with the specified major Name of university City/state where university is based Graduation year Peripheral data, like average GPA and minor subjects If you have not yet graduated, you can add the future graduation date without changing the order of information. Moreover, write down the educational qualifications that matter most to the job you are applying for. Others can be left out or put at the end. 4.             Paragraph resumes Resumes that use paragraphs of information are not very effective. Instead of this approach, you should use a bulleted style to make it more reader-friendly. Make sure you use bullets consistently. Do not use bullets in one section and switch to a paragraph-based style in other sections. 5.             Resumes based on common templates Many job applicants use the Microsoft Word template to write their resumes without knowing that recruiters instantly understand when it is being used. There is nothing wrong with this per se, but it makes the resume look unremarkable. At a time where recruiters are looking for any way in which resumes stand out from the rest, using such overused templates can make them think you lack imagination and conviction. 6.             Resumes without keywords Employers and recruiters are turning to keyword search databases to automate the first phase of resume filtering. Naturally, job seekers have to optimize their resumes accordingly for such keyword searches. Most companies that use such methods often add the keywords they are looking for right in the job advert. Therefore, it is a good idea to read the advert carefully and find the words that are most important. Add them to your resume, but only within a word density of 1.5-2 percent at most. 7.             Resumes with direct references Do not list specific references directly on your resumes. If you want to do it, make sure you list them separately and submit them only when you are asked to do so. You might be tempted to add the phrase ‘References available on request’, but you can leave it out without any negative consequences. [INFOGRAPHIC: Top 10 Funny Resume Mistakes]

Rating Your Job Search Networking Referrals - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Rating Your Job Search Networking Referrals - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Several of my recent posts have discussed networking. The most recent one, Better Questions Equal Better Networking Results, noted that one of the most effective questions you can ask in networking is Would you be willing to make a personal introduction? While this is an important question that CAN produce many great referrals for you, in this post I want to emphasize this key principle from Chapter 12 of my career book Fast Track Your Job Search (and Career!): Quantity without quality can be almost useless. This statement is an outgrowth of my earlier years in career coaching, when I would find clients getting lots of referrals but becoming frustrated by the results. My early training in engineering drove me to dig in and find out why, and what I came to realize was that my clients were not getting QUALITY referrals. This motivated me to create a quality scale for networking referrals, which I have used for years and found to be very helpful. Now, whenever a client is getting referrals but their networking is not producing good results, we look carefully at how each ranks on my referral quality scale. So, what is this mysterious scale? While it is too complex to lay out in complete detail in a short blog post, the following examples provide a short description of what the referrer has done and how they might advise you of their action in making their referral of you to another person.  I consider the minimum quality referral you should strive to obtain to be a 7. 2 â€" Referrer gave prospect your contact info and asked them to call you. (“Expect a call from Jane.”) 4 â€" Referrer sends a lukewarm introductory email  to prospect, suggests you call them (I sent Jane a note and told her to expect your call.) 7 â€" Referrer is coached by you regarding the strategy for introducing you, makes an introductory call (not email) to the prospect, gives you a strong testimonial, and gets a commitment that they will meet (if local) with you. (“As you suggested, I called Jane. I told her about you and  put in a positive word for you.  I told her that she would enjoy meeting you and she agreed to meet with you for coffee as a mutual introduction.  I  recommend you call her today while it is still fresh on her mind. Her number is 678-555-1212 and she is expecting your call.”) Whats better than a 7, you ask? The person introduces you in person in a three-way coffee or meeting. It has been my experience that most referrers, if not coached properly, will tend to give crummy referrals. Its not that they intend to do this. They just dont know any better or, in some cases, are  lazy.  If you think back on the types of introductions you have been provided in the past, I expect you can relate. If so, then your challenge is to start rating your future ones and start reaching for the stars to get a 7 or better. Knowing what you want and asking specifically for it, with a little coaching thrown in, definitely has the potential to get you more of what you want while reducing your wasted time following up on weak networking referrals. Oh, and by the way. This can also be applied to other business introductions, such as for sales and business development activities. So, what do you think? Is it possible that crummy referral quality has been holding you back? If so, now you have a new perspective and can most certainly improve.

Too Old to Study No Way!

Too Old to Study No Way! As you move through life and the distance since you were last at school or university gets longer and longer, the prospect of returning to study becomes more daunting. And the statistics back up that the older you get, the less likely it is that you will be studying. However, if getting more qualifications is something that you have considered for a long time, there are plenty of reasons why you should consider throwing yourself back into the world of learning. In this blog post, we will look at a few of the most common objections that people have about returning to study later in life, so we can overcome them and encourage you to follow your dreams. It’s Such a Big Decision Some people look at studying as simply too big a decision for them to make. Of course, as life goes on, it is likely that you will encounter a host of responsibilities including childcare, an existing career, and bills to pay. However, there are so many flexible online studying options out there these days that balancing your career, your home life and your learning is no longer the impossible task it once was. In fact, options like a 100% Online RN to BSN Program could end up being hugely beneficial to your career, so always ask your employer and make the case for studying as they may be willing to support you in your decision. Ultimately, if you want to go back to studying enough, you will always find a way of making it happen. I Might Be the Oldest Person Studying As people are living longer and looking to fill their time, more and more people are doing this with study. Most educators and trainers are experienced in catering to the needs of all types of students. And with online courses, age is a total irrelevance. Even if you do go back to a classroom environment, you will find that a lot of people are supportive of your decision, and you shouldn’t let what anyone thinks stop you from achieving what you want. In fact, returning to study when you are older gives you valuable life experience, and you are likely to approach your course with an increased sense of dedication and motivation. I Already Have a Career Just because you have a career, it doesn’t mean that you are prevented from ever going back to studying. If you want to have a career change or even advance in your current profession, the qualifications that you obtain can help to unlock doors for you. You are going to expand your skillset no matter what you study, and you may even increase your earning potential significantly. And as we have already mentioned a couple of times, if you choose to study online, you may even find that you can balance your studying around your current career. For many people, this gives them the best of both worlds. I’m Not Sure If I’ll Enjoy Studying Again Image Source There is only one way of finding out if you will enjoy studying again or not and that it by going out and doing it. Perhaps you could test the water by taking a short course with less commitment. If you find that you enjoy yourself, you could then go on to take something more advanced in the future. For a lot of people, they find that studying again gives them a new lease of life and they rediscover a passion for learning. Even if you didn’t enjoy school in the past, people change throughout their lives, and you may find that you are at the stage in your life that you can really embrace studying and developing new skills. And you don’t even have to take a course that is directly related to your current field of work. The transferable skills that you acquire may end up benefiting you in ways that you never thought about. So, after reading through this article and some of the objections that people have when returning to study later in life, hopefully, you feel more inspired that you can overcome the obstacles in front of you. In fact, these barriers are largely ones that exist in your own mind, so it is a change in perspective that you need to develop in the first place. Ultimately, you never know until you try, so if you have been thinking about studying again, why not take the plunge?

Synchronicity and Serendipity Can Be Essential in Life - Career Pivot

Synchronicity and Serendipity Can Be Essential in Life - Career Pivot Synchronicity and Serendipity Synchronicity and Serendipity came up in a discussion during a mastermind group video call in the Career Pivot Community when we were discussing a member’s success. Before I go further with this story let me define the terms. Synchronicity is defined by Dictionary.com as the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection. Serendipity is defined by Dictionary.com as the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. How do these apply to our careers and life? Sometimes we need to be in the right place at the right time for good things to happen. We could leave this to chance or we could just start trying things to give us the opportunity to be in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you need to do something rather than nothing. For More:What to Do When You Are Stuck in Your Career Willie and Her Story Willie, who we were discussing, had a rough couple of years both personally and professionally. She lost her job several years earlier and was completely burned out. She was given the opportunity to go work for a close relative at a tech startup. This was really exciting for her but a year or so into the job her close relative died and so did the company. She got the tech itch and decided to pursue attending a coding boot camp. In fact, she attended several and even though she enjoyed the challenge it was very difficult for her. After successfully completing the boot camps she started to apply for jobs. She got nowhere. The technology that was in hot demand when she started was no longer hot. She was in her late 50s and no one wanted to hire a 50+-year-old female junior programmer who still needed a lot of help. She kept applying and applying and getting rejected. You get the picture. At the same time, she was the primary caretaker for both her mother and father who lived separately. At the same time, her partner of many years had a major injury where he broke a lot of bones. Listen to the most recent episode From both a personal and professional point of view, Willie was having a rough time. Driving for Lyft After her father eventually passed away and her partner recovered, her partner suggested that maybe she should drive for Lyft or Uber. The idea was repulsive to her in her current mental state. She asked me and I told her she needed to do something. Go drive for Lyft or Uber, go work at Whole Foods, or start pet sitting but just do something so she could have success and feel better about herself. Willie consulted several other people she knew and trusted and they all told her to go do something. Driving for Lyft or Uber would be good for her. Willie sold her sports car and bought a sedan and started to drive for Lyft. Synchronicity and Serendipity Get Started Willie loves to drive and interact with people. She ended up driving for Lyft for 5-6 months. The social interactions with customers in her car picked up her spirits. She did have a few really bad incidents with customers but none put her in physical danger. She had the time freedom to take care of her parents and was able to work out when she wanted, which was really important to her. Her spirits started to lift. When customers got in her car they often asked Willie why she was driving for Lyft. She told them her story about going to coding boot camp and wanting to become a coder and not finding work. Many actually wanted to help but were not in a position to help. Others presented her with interesting opportunities that did not pan out. One day, the fiance to a CEO of a tech start-up was a customer of Willie’s. The customer went ahead and introduced Willie to her fiance. This led to some consulting work that fed Willie’s ego. Willie was starting to feel good about herself again. She was then approached by someone she knew from one of the boot camps she attended about helping with some coding during her maternity leave. It was not a lot of work but she was getting some experience. This went on for more than six months. Things Just Start to Happen Willie’s confidence was coming back and she was soon bringing in enough work to fill 70% of her time. This still allowed her the time to be the caretaker for her mother. At our mastermind group, Willie announced she had just signed an agreement that would fill her schedule and would bring in more money than she had made in years. When asked what she had learned from this experience she explained that driving for Lyft changed everything. Her partner suggested it, I agreed, several other people told her it was a good idea but she still did not want to try it. She learned that she needs to take advice from others more readily. In addition, by just getting out and doing something she put herself in a position for things to happen. She now realizes that was absolutely key. Whether it was synchronicity or just serendipity that allowed Willie to create a new path for herself is unimportant. Willie took action when taking action was really hard. Are you willing to take action so synchronicity or serendipity can happen? Marc Miller Like what you just read? Share it with your friends using the buttons above. Like What You Read? Train Driver Application Example Questions and Answers

Train Driver Application Example Questions and Answers In our previous blog we provided you with some essential tips on how to complete the train driver application form. While our previous blog laid out some top tips and guidelines to follow, in this blog we’ll be focusing on the MOST IMPORTANT part of the train driver application form â€" the question and answer section. Keep reading for some real sample responses, to the type of questions you’ll encounter in the application form. The Train Driver Application Example QuestionsThis an essential element of the application form. While the other parts of the form are of course important, it is this section of the form that will be scrutinised in the most detail. The assessors want to know about who you are, and what makes you the right fit for their company. When answering this section, it’s incredibly important that you don’t just ‘say the right things.’ The bottom line is this: working as a train driver is not for everyone. The application form isn’t just for the benefit of t he assessors, but for the benefit of you too. You need to ensure that you mean what you say â€" so be honest, but sensible. If you aren’t the right fit for a job as train driver then the TOC won’t employee you. Train drivers need to be sensible, responsible and able to adhere to safety expectations at all times. If you are someone who takes lots of risks, gets bored easily, or doesn’t care about customer service, then this is not the right role for you.In the next section, we’ve laid out a number of train driver application example questions, along with sample responses to each question. Please note that these are to be used as a guide only. It is important that you answer the questions on your application form based on your own experiences and knowledge, and not based on our responses to the train driver application example template laid out.Train Driver Application Example Question 1Q. Now that you’ve read more about the job, please tell us why you’re applying for it a nd what knowledge, experience or skills you have that might be relevant. The clue in this type of question is to READ about the job you are applying for. The question is asking you to match your knowledge, experience and skills with the job you have applied for. Therefore you need to read the job description before responding. Job descriptions or person specifications usually have both ‘essential’ and ‘desirable’ criteria included. Basically you must provide evidence of where you can meet the ‘essential’ criteria on your application form. Desirable criteria will gain you extra marks but they are not essential. If the TOC have not sent you a copy of the job description then try to obtain a copy of it before completing the form. This will give you an insight into the role that you are applying for. Once you have read the information about the post you will then be able to construct a suitable answer. Try to include any knowledge, skills or experience you may have that relate s to the job description. If you have experience or knowledge in health and safety, working in pressurised situations or working in a customer-based environment then you may wish to include these also. The Trainee Train Driver position is one that requires your 100% attention at all times, and an ability to learn new skills quickly and accurately. Again, if you have experience of working in these conditions then say so. Now take a look at the following sample response before constructing your own, based on your own skills, knowledge and experience.Sample ResponseI am applying for this post because I am looking for a new and challenging role. I enjoy working in a customer-focused environment and believe I would make an excellent Train Driver for your company. I am also prepared to relocate to live within 30 minutes of the depot. I understand that the company is changing and moving forward and I believe you would be an exciting company to work for. I also believe I can bring something to the team in terms of commitment, motivation and enthusiasm.I have worked in a customer-based role for a number of years now and during this time I have developed skills that can be applied to the role of a Trainee Train Driver. As well as being a good communicator and possessing excellent practical skills I am also highly safety conscious and understand that this is a very important element of the role. In addition to my 12 years’ experience in a customer-focused role I worked for 4 years with the Royal Navy. I am therefore a highly disciplined person and a very good team player. I have educational qualifications in English Language, English Literature and Art and I am also coming to the end of studying for a Diploma in Management Studies. I also hold a Health and Safety qualification through IODA in Nottingham. I am a fit and active person who visits the gym/swimming pool three times a week and I also play football for a local Sunday team. I am a very good communicator and lea rn new skills quickly. I am used to working long and varied hours and I understand that the role requires a high level of flexibility, which I am prepared for.I enjoy working with, and meeting people from all walks of life and I truly value the benefits of a diverse workforce. To summarise, I am a highly professional, caring, trustworthy, friendly and motivated person and I believe I would make an excellent member of the Train Operating Company team.Train Driver Application Example Question 2Q. Please tell us about anything you get up to outside work that gives us a better idea of what you’re like as a person and why you might be right for our company. This type of question is designed to assess the type of person you are outside of work. This will give the company an idea of how you are likely to perform at work and will tell them if you are fit, healthy and active. When responding to this type of question, make sure you make reference to the job description. What type of duties w ill you be required to perform and can you match your external activities to them? Being fit and active is always a positive aspect that the recruitment staff will be looking for. If you are active outside of work, then you are also likely to be active at work and achieve your tasks to the required standard. If you have recently achieved any educational or academic qualifications outside of work then it would be a good idea to make reference to these too.Now take a look at the sample response before creating your own based around your own skills, knowledge and experience.Sample ResponseI attend the gym at least 3 times per week and carry out some light weight work. Whilst at the gym, I usually perform 20 minutes of rowing each time and cover a distance of 5,000 metres. I particularly enjoy swimming and swim 50 lengths, 3 times per week. When I get the opportunity, I like to go walking, too, in order to keep healthy. Staying fit and healthy means that I am able to maintain a high lev el of concentration at work and it also helps to keep my enthusiasm and motivation levels high. This shows that I am a dedicated and determined person who is always looking to improve himself.MUSICIAN â€" I currently play the drums and piano. I have always enjoyed being creative and I play the drums in a function band that plays at wedding events and parties on some weekends. This shows that I have the dedication to learn new skills and I have the ability to concentrate on the task in hand when required. Learning new skills is essential to the role of a Trainee Train Driver and I believe that I have the ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt them to the work environment in a safe and effective manner.Train Driver Application Example Question 3As the role you’ve applied for means that you’ll be dealing with the safety of our customers and the delivery of our operation, we would like to hear examples of how you have used your initiative to solve a difficult problem. Having the initiative to solve problems is integral to the Train Driver’s role. On many occasions you will be on your own for many hours and you will have many responsibilities. Whilst you will have set procedures and guidelines to adhere to, you must still have the required initiative to solve difficult problems. Before responding to questions of this nature, make sure you READ the question first and try to understand what is required. Remember to write a response that identifies the use of your initiative to solve a difficult problem.Sample ResponseDuring a recent staff meeting I was aware that there were a number of problems between some members of the team. The team wasn’t working effectively so we all discussed ways in which we could improve. The actions of the team were starting to have an effect on the team’s performance, so I decided to take the initiative to resolve the issue. I facilitated the meeting and asked everybody to share their views and opinions. I listened to each person individually and tried to encourage people to come up with solutions in order to improve the team’s effectiveness. A positive point that came from our discussions was that people felt that we didn’t hold enough meetings to talk about the problems we all face. It was agreed that with immediate effect we would hold weekly meetings to discuss issues, gather and share information, and look for ways that we could all support each other in our work. Since the meeting the team has moved forward and is now working far more effectively. This entry was posted in Train Driver, 'How To' Help, Job Competencies. Bookmark the permalink.
